Abstract/Contents:"The biological, genetic, and ecological problems arising from commercial revegetation in high-alpine sites are briefly outlined. An ecologically compatible revegetation concept for those sites is characterized by the exclusive use of adapted, precisely composed, and diverse plant material. It includes not only seeding but also planting; the merits of the latter technique, which is expensive but successful, are briefly discussed. The biologically degradable geotextiles used for protection of revegetated surfaces are ecologically neutral; they promote the ingress of plants from neighbouring vegetation and thus increase species diversity in the revegetated areas. In conclusion, the author argues that revegetation of High-Alpine ski runs should be fundamentally reconsidered. The current commercial techniques may, at most, be used in valleys and more or less up to the timberline, but they are not suited to High-Alpine sites and only bring unnecessary costs in the long term. The success of ecologically compatible revegetation in High-Alpine sites should not however, be used to justify further machine-grading of large surfaces within the alpine vegetation belt above the timberline."
