Abstract/Contents:"The phenotype of cellular and tissue responses to the herbicide isoxaben is under study in sensitive broadleaf plant species. In treated root tips, cell expansion and root hair differentiation, together with cessation of elongation, result in a swollen root tip response similar but not identical to that elicited by microtuble disrupting herbicides. In cultured protoplasts, isoxaben treatments result in cell expansion and in synthesis of an incomplete cell wall (visualized by staining). In these two systems, attempt to phenocopy the herbicide response with microtuble disrupting agents, ionophores, and herbicides with known modes of action in intermediary metabolism have places the isoxaben response in a unique class along with dichlobenil (DCB), which has been termed an inhibitor of cellulose biosynthesis."
