Abstract/Contents:"It was the purpose of this experiment to reduce, by various measures, a thatch layer of a thickness of 35 mm. Consequently, the fertilization measures were changed, i.e. organic or synthetic fertilizer with a long-term effect as well as lime were applied and mechanical measures were taken. All this resulted, over a period of 2 years in a reduction of the thatch layer by 40 per cent. When examined, the thatch showed a comparatively close C:N relationship as well as a sufficient biological activity, i.e. positive factors for the decomposition of organic matter. The decomposition rate, such as it was found, is therefore considered to be mainly the result of the proper regulation of the pH value in the thatch layer."
