Abstract/Contents:"Efforts with regard to the resistence of turf grasses towards diseases have been concentrated, in the area covered by the German Democratic Republic on diseases, following their importance, such as snow mould, crown rust, mildew on perennial ryegrass, net blotch, rust diseases, mildew on smooth-stalked meadow grass, mildew on red fescues and sheeps fescue. The small number of registered turf varieties has an only limited impact on the quality of turf on sports grounds. There is a predominance of weeds. In the area covered by the German Democratic Republic grass diseases which would be stimulated by artificial sandy soil constructions and intensive management, i.e. the application of fertilizer, irrigation and clipping are of little importance. Due to the fact that the top layer of the turf consists mainly of not improved top soil and the supply of nutrients is moderate or insufficient, that there is a deficit of water, a lack of techniques when new seeds are sown or a second sowing is effected in combination with soil improvement measures and that only limited financial and material means are available, the turfs can in general stand only little wear and tear and are usually highly infested with weeds. The chemical weed control, for the most part not yet relevant in an ecological respect, which does not improve the populations is only apparently of importance. The methods and means applied are demonstrated in a survey. There is no direct or prophylactic control of grass diseases neither are prophylactic measures of weed control taken, such as e.g. the application of fertilizer-herbicide combinations. For the purpose of obtaining better turfs on sports grounds, in general, a more qualified layout respectively renovation and keeping to establish and maintain good turf varieties will have predominance for some time within a new framework over measures to control diseases, pests and weeds."
