Abstract/Contents:"The next few years will be boom years for the golf industry. By the year 2000, the National Golf Course Foundation projects that our country will have 30 million golfers, including ten million new hard-core golfers. Municipalities across the country have often considered the attractive proposition and economic advantage of owning and maintaining a golf course in their community. Usually the dream of ownership never becomes a reality, however, because many communities cannot afford to design, construct, and maintain a municipal golf course. When building a course, a governmental entity generally has four options: pay cash, rent without a long-term obligation, issue long-term debt in the form of bonds, or lease-purchase through installment payments. The fourth option leads to the innovative way many cities are financing their golf courses: a municipal lease contract. To make it easy for the growing number of cities who want golf courses to have them, Sam Gunderson, president of Golf, Inc., has formed a joint venture with First Golf Corporation, to provide a turnkey construction package for cities to own golf courses. Gunderson states 'In the competitive economic development climate that American cities now find themselves, golf courses are no longer a luxury. They are amenities that attract the kind of clean industrye very town wants. This construction method works equally well in small and large cities because it is designed to be flexible.'"
