Abstract/Contents:A trial on restorative fertilizer treatments is reported. The vegetation, established on a south-facing slope without topsoil, on greywacke, had degenerated to 25-30% ground cover. The fertilizer treatments given were N, NPK, or P, with P in the form of Agrosil in some treatments. The first fertilizer treatments were made in the very dry hot summer of 1976, and were repeated in spring 1978. On this P2O5-deficient soil, N by itself had no appreciable effect, but NPK and P increased the amount of cover considerably and changed the sward from one dominated by Festuca ovina tenuifolia to one with, in particular, a greater amount of F. rubra. There was also more Poa pratensis. The substantially increased ground cover with NPK and P (particularly when given as Agrosil) was maintained to the end of the trial (November 1982). In parallel with the ground cover, the organic matter content of the soil increased. In the succession of vegetation, the plots receiving P2O5 showed conspicuous development of small-seeded legumes, especially Trifolium repens.
