| Abstract/Contents: | Above-ground biomass and tiller numbers were recorded on both sand and soil rootzones, and root biomass was recorded at depths of 0-5 cm, 5-10 cm and 10-15 cm on sand only. The measurements were made on unworn turf in September 1982, just over 1 year after sowing. Above-ground biomass increased markedly with increasing N except at the highest level where there was a decline, particularly on soil. N levels yielding the maximum biomass were 462 and 445 kg ha-1 for sand and soil, respectively. Tiller numbers increased continuously with N, an upper limit of tiller density not being reached. Mean dry weight/tiller declined with increasing N. Root biomass decreased with increasing N and with sampling depth, most roots being in the 0-5 cm depth. The root:shoot ratio also declined with increasing N. The optimum N level for root biomass may be 100-225 kg ha-1 but the evidence was inconclusive. |
