Abstract/Contents:Fine fescues help establish and maintain healthy, attractive lawns without crowding other lawngrass species. Fine fescues include creeping red fescue, spreading fescue, chewings fescue, hard fescue, and fine leafed sheeps fescue. These are the best turf types within the thirty-five species found in nature. Some valuable traits of fine fescues include: most adaptable, most versatile, thrives on sandy soil, tolerant of dry, infertile and acid soil, withstands northern cold as well as heat of the upper south, grows well in sun or shade and can be mowed at 1-1/2 inches or less, a true low maintenance lawngrass with minimum need for fertilizer or pesticides, healthy vigorous seed that is rapid in development. Since fine fescues are generally tolerant of high temperature and too little moisture, only too much irrigation and fertilizer are causes for concern. Seed characteristics, foliage traits, shade tolerance, mowing heights, disease and insect resistances, soil conditions needed, fertilization, soil acidity, and lawn renovation and overseeding are discussed.
