Abstract/Contents:Turf was grown for 4 years in root zone layers of sand and peat with or without added nutrients or in sands having a range of particle sizes, some with added sewage sludge. Earthworm activity under the root zones containing peat was poor but was higher under those containing sewage sludge, particularly with fine sand. In the peat root zones the pH decreased while in those with sewage sludge it increased slightly. The amount and thickness of thatch were greatest on sand/peat mixtures. They were lower on root zones with sewage sludge, on which growth was increased.
