Abstract/Contents: | "The playing performance of a number of natural turf and artificial turf pitches were monitored to help define performance standards for artificial turf pitches used for professional soccer. On the natural turf pitches playing quality varied according to the quality of construction, maintenance, the amount of wear the pitch had received and weather conditions. In general, individual components of playing quality satisfied performance standards established for natural turf and by the elimination of extreme values it was possible to define the playing characteristics of good quality natural turf. The artificial turf surfaces gave a more consistent playing performance and the results were not as dependent on weather conditions. There was considerable overlap in values compared with natural turf surfaces for ball rebound resilience, traction, sliding distance and force reduction. However, measurements of ball roll properties suggest that a ball rolls more quickly on artificial surfaces and peak deceleration values during high energy impacts were greater on artificial turf. Performance standards are proposed for ball rebound resilience, ball roll, traction, sliding distance, force reduction and peak deceleration." |
