| Abstract/Contents: | " The spatial variations in bulk density, soil water potential and soil strength were measured in transects across fairy rings formed by Marasmius oreades. Despite the absence of roots and the compact structural appearance of soil within the bare zone, no significant differences in bulk density were found between this region of soil and control areas away from the influence of the ring. In addition to the drier soil conditions close to the bare zone, large variations in soil strength were recorded. Values of cone penetrometer resistance in excess of 5 MPa were recorded which, from experimental studies elsewhere, are able to severely restrict the ability of plant roots to penetrate or elongate on soil. It is possible therefore that increased soil strength could be an important factor limiting the penetration of new roots in the bare zone of M. oreades fairy rings." |
