Abstract/Contents:Presents research conducted at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst "to evaluate the cold acclimation behavior of three cool-season turfgrasses (creeping bentgrass, Kentucky bluegrass, [and] perennial ryegrass), and to understand the function of antioxidant response system coupled with proline-linked pentose phosphate pathway to determine fitness during cold stress period." Details the materials and methods used in the study, stating that "all plants were grown in growth chamber at 25/20° C [degrees Celsius] day/night temperature, and with 12 h [hour] photoperiod for one month." Reports that "most significant changes were observed in proline accumulation, as all acclimated turfgrass plants showed higher proline content as compared to the control." Concludes that "our results revealed that during acclimation, the antioxidant response system and synthesis of phenolic metabolites are stimulated in cool-season turfgrass to counter stress induced photooxidative damage of cell under cold stress period."
