Abstract/Contents:"Emergence of tall fescue and perennial ryegrass was improved at low soil moisture levels by either presowing hardening of 24 hours soaking in water and drying at room temperature or by hydrophilic treatment of the seed with a 5% Gelvatol solution. However, the combination of presowing hardening plus hydrophilic treatment of the seed was more effective in improving emergence of both species. Emergence percentage was significantly improved at low soil moisture levels in both species and in tall fescue improvement was significant even at high moisture levels. Averaged over all soil moisture regimes this treatment was significantly superior to either presowing hardening or hydrophilic treatment of the seed. Emergence rate was also significantly superior at all soil moisture levels. Depending upon species and soil moisture levels emergence rate was improved by one to several days compared to the control and this improvement may be of great practical value, especially under arid and semi-arid conditions. In addition, effects of this treatment being more pronounced in tall fescue than in perennial ryegrass suggests that this treatment is probably more effective in species with a slow inherent emergence rate and sensitivity to high osmotic potentials."
