Abstract/Contents: | The main function of core cultivation is to alleviate soil compaction. Three research studies conducted at Iowa State University are briefly presented. One study demonstrated the effect of core cultivation on thatch removal and prevention. Another investigated the effects of core cultivation on effectiveness of preemergence herbicides. A third study investigated the influence of core cultivation on the effectiveness of 4 slow release nitrogen sources. Previous research at Kansas State University demonstrated the primary reason for damage from soil compaction was the resulting low soil oxygen levels. Core cultivation is useful in aiding the channeling of oxygen back to the soil to aid in development of a deeper root system and resore the health of the plant. |
