Abstract/Contents:Insects can cause substantial damage to sports turf areas but fortunately the UK has only a few insects which cause problems. However, when insect pests do attack turf in this country, they may occasionally cause significant damage. Describes leatherjackets, chafers and fever flies, the most widespread UK pest problems, together with minor insect pests such as the frit fly. Leatherjackets can be controlled to some extent by three approved pesticides: Chlorpyrifos, Gamma-HCH and Gamma-HCH plus thiophanatemethyl. Some of these pesticides can be used to control some of the other insect pests, also.
