Abstract/Contents:Turf managers have probably had as much as they can handle with dealing with weeds, pests, and diseases in the turf they look after. But now they have yet another concern, which is the spreading of nitrates. Two important aspects on why the EEC has set strict standards for nitrate in drinking water have been established. They include possible health effects and possible environmental effects in terms of excessive plant growth in surface water. The health argument for the control of nitrate is based upon two risks-the "blue-baby syndrome" and a theoretical possibility of stomach cancer. In the environmental aspect, an excess of nitrates affects the balance of water plant communities and even the oxygen supply for fish.
