Abstract/Contents:"Transforming land which was part of a derelict sewage works into a soccer pitch for Third Division Walsall was the task that faced Agripower (Midlands) at the end of last year. The main contractors, GMI Construction Group of Leeds, demolished and cleared the old sewage works and levelled the site." There were some debris below the surface that caused some problems, but a JCB digger removed it all. A drainage system was installed using a Masterbroek trenching machine. This unit digs the trench and lays the pipe in one operation. The advantage is that it also incorporates an elevator so that spoil is dumped into a truck alongside, which enables one to do away with the need to have a separate spoil collection exercise, and facilitates disposal of the removed material. The trencher is laser-controlled to maintain an exact level during pipe-laying. Drains were laid at 5m centres across the entire pitch. The next step was the importing to site of 4000 tonnes of granite chippings to form a 300mm (12in) stone base for the drainage system. "This was blinded with 50mm layer of 5-3mm grit material, and then a 300mm layer of Tarmac MFM2 horticultural sand was applied. This is approved for winter pitch construction applications by the Sports Turf Research Institute." On top of the sand was laid a 50mm layer of sand/soil mix (ratio 60:40). There was a slight problem with foxes looking for food, but it didn't persist. A running track was constructed around the pitch perimeter with a red shale material.
