Abstract/Contents:Golf first gained popularity in the U.S. at the Open of 1913. However, interest in golf began to decline as a result of World War I and the Depression of the 1930's. Then from 1955 to 1975 a twenty year surge occurred which sparked the greatest sustained construction boom in golf history. Some of the early architects include Charles Blair MacDonald, Walter Travis, Robert Trent Jones and Stanley Thompson. "Great golf courses of the past and present are not the product of one man. First there is the architect, then the builder and the layout lies in the dedicated hands of the superintendent. Regardless of what is said about them, they are true environmentalists."
