Abstract/Contents:"The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of fungicides for the control of dollar spot on a colonial bentgrass/annual bluegrass fairway. The trial was initiated on 12 Aug 10 on the 15th fairway of Trysting Tree Golf Course located 1 mile east of Corvallis, Oregon. Four subsequent applications were made biweekly on 25 Aug, 8 Sept, 22 Sep, and 7 Oct. The 15th fairway borders the Willamette River and has a history of dollar spot infection in late summer and early fall when the temperatures cool and the humidity rises. The size of the plots measured 10 ft long x 5 ft wide and included a 1 ft buffer between plots. Fungicide treatments were applied with a CO2-powered two-wheeled sprayer with a 5 ft boom using TeeJet 80015 nozzles spraying 1 gallon of spray solution per 1,000 sq ft at 30 psi. Speed was calibrated with a KORG MA-30 metronome. Turf quality and percent disease cover ratings were taken on 24 Sept, 7 Oct, 20 Oct and 11 Nov. Because of low disease pressure, only data for the last two rating dates are included below. Turf quality ratings were made on a 1 to 9 scale (9=best quality). Data were subjected to analysis of variance using a randomized complete block design with 4 replications. Differences between means were determined by Fisher's Protected LSD at the 5 percent level. Additionally, a pre-planned contrast was performed for the turf quality data on 11 Nov to compare the plots treated with different chlorothalonil formulations (treatments 2 through 11) at low vs. high rates, respectively. Disease pressure was low as the untreated check plots averaged 7.5 percent disease cover on the last rating date, 11 Nov. All the plots treated with fungicides had nearly 100 percent control. The turf quality was generally excellent for treated plots throughout the trial. On 11 Nov, there was a statistical difference in turf quality between plots treated with the high rate vs. the low rate of the different formulations of chlorothalonil. The plots treated with the high rate of chlorothalonil averaged 7.7 vs. 7.3 for the plots treated with the low rate. However, the majority of this difference appears to come from the two dry flowable (DF) formulations from Quali-Pro. The p-value for this contrast was 0.047."
