Abstract/Contents:"Amenity grass breeding in Britain is taking place on only a limited scale compared with a number of other countries, primarily Holland. The genetic potential in Britain is extremely high and remains to be exploited. The aims and objectives of a breeding programme must be clearly defined and will be discussed with, in particular, reference to seed production. Breeding a new cultivar takes between 10 and 15 years and the methods of selection, trialing and seed multiplication will be illustrated. Seed multiplication of perennial ryegrass has been an important crop with an established cultural practice in limited areas of Britain. Multiplication of red fescue has only been carried out on a very limited scale restricted to around 150 hectares. The development of several new British bred cultivars has led to an increase of interest in this species and its use as a break from more traditional crops. With this increased interest a number of problems have developed not previously encountered. Row spacing, fertiliser levels, weed control, density of the mature crop and maintaining seed yields over 2 or 3 years have all created problems. Some answers to these problems will be suggested and discussed."
