Abstract/Contents: | "Dry patch, where areas of fine turf dry out and become water-repellent, is a major problem particularly in golf green management. Although the cause of dry patch has not been elucidated, physical conditions such as compaction and high spots, and waxy substances secreted by fungi below the thatch layer are known to be involved. A laboratory screening programme identified a new wetting agent Turfex as able to greatly increase the penetration of water into soil cores taken from hydrophobic turf. In comparative laboratory & field tests the re-wetting properties of Turfex were greater than standard proprietary wetting agents. To determine the optimum application timing and dose rate, Turfex was compared to Hydro-wet, Aqua-gro, & Synperonic NDB in field trials on a golf links fairway. When the first application was made in late spring, prior to the appearance of severe dry patch in early summer, and then repeated at 3-4 week intervals, all treatments initially alleviated the symptoms of dry patch and increased water infiltration. However, applications to severe dry patch during the summer months were generally ineffective, emphasising the importance of an early season preventative application. After a programme of wetting agent applications, treatments were ceased in early August and their residual effect on dry patch assessed over a seven week period. Whilst some lasting effect on dry patch was detected following Aqua-gro and Hydro-wet treatments, the greatest long-term alleviation of dry patch was obtained with Turfex. preventative application.
