Abstract/Contents:"In Sweden, sod is commonly used for rapid establishment of grass. There are many problems associated with this practice, including the great variety of soils on which sod is grown, problems with cold hardening when the sod is transported from the south to the middle of Sweden, and the common practice of starting to wear the grass too soon after laying of the sod. Furthermore, the demand for frequent irrigation during the period of establishment makes it difficult to maintain adequate nutrient status and enhances the invasion of Poa annua. Some of these problems are due to the climatic conditions, which greatly differ from south to north in Sweden. Also, the fact that both football and golf are played throughout the growing season gives little time for any renovation work. A field experiment established in 1989 will compare seeded and sodded football-type turf in four different soil constructions (1. Native clay with 20 mm sand on top; 2. Prunty-Mulqueen type; 3. German DIN-type and; 4. STRI/USGA type deep sand construction). Additionally, three types of sand dressing material (coarse, medium and 'standard', i.e. wide grade) will be tested on the seeded and sodded plots. A critical root depth of 100 mm will be used as the starting point for wear (using an English standard wear machine), in order to be able to evaluate rate of establishment."
