Abstract/Contents:Eugene, Oregon's Parks Services Division formally adopted IPM for all vegetation and pest control operations in 1980. This methodology, which is thought to have originated in agriculture with the work of USDA employees Hunter and Coad in 1923, stresses the use of naturally occurring controls and cultural practices in combination with applications of pesticide materials only when infestation levels reach a "threshold", determined in agriculture by economic factors. At the George E. Owen Municipal Rose Garden, 4000 roses are managed with the help of predators, good irrigation and fertilization. Good maintenance standards are the key. This program saves lots of money and time. The savings are invested in good cultural programs. The idea is to keep the roses healthy, eliminating the need to invest resources in spray programs.
