Abstract/Contents:Due to the value of maintenance one should keep their equipment up to par. Turf managers spend a lot of time preparing the machines and other equipment for use. However, the machines are not being used according to the owner's manual specifications for proper use. For example running over curbs, operating on low aired tires, and engines running low on oil with grease fittings that haven't seen the end of a grease gun in weeks. Turfgrass machines range in cost from $300-$40,000 each. We expect the equipment to operate properly if designed and manufactured properly. However, proper operator use and appropriate maintenance on a day to day basis is necessary. Proper training of personnel is essential. A valuable person to have on staff is a qualified mechanic to maintain the equipment efficiently for use on a daily basis and keep records of all repairs and scheduled maintenance checks. "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure."
