Abstract/Contents:Athletic field management requires the implementation of a number of cultural practices. If cultural practices are carefully formulated, improved turfgrass growth and persistence will result. However, poorly conceived and executed cultural programs may result in even worse growing conditions. The cultural practices to be concerned about are: field construction, turfgrass species/cultivar selection, fertilization, irrigation, mowing, traffic control, cultivation, pests, vertical mowing, topdressing, post-game repair and renovation. Every practice, except mowing, should be specifically targeted to improve some aspect of the environment that limits turf performance.
