Abstract/Contents:If there is a concern about power costs, maintenance budget and irrigation problems, the variable frequency drive (VFD) is a better solution. VFD systems use computer controls to precisely adjust pump speeds and output instead of using mechanical control valves. This type of technology is automatic, efficient and works with standard pumps and motors. The VFD system also saves energy because it is more economizing to vary the speed of a pump. Changing speed seems better in that it cuts down on the wear and tear on the pumps and motors. In comparing monthly power bills, $12,000 was saved which nearly cut the bill in half.
