Abstract/Contents:Sports turf injury from use stress is real. Sports varieties help provide good sports turf. Each sport has its unique wear and tear problems. Good management can minimize these. However, use must be recognized as a major cause of stress. Many interrelated conditions contribute to injury patterns. These are not readily identifiable most of the time. The watchful eye of the grounds superintendent is a highly valuable asset. Includes the surface requirements for eight different playing surfaces--golf putting, bowling, tennis; golf tee; golf fairway; soccer; baseball; football; home lawn games, badminton, volleyball, croquet; and playground games. Describes turfgrass as the ideal surface and effects of sports activity on turf--soil compaction, crusing of turf, scuffing of foliage, and tearing of sod. Turf management effects on surface qualities are presented. Six practices are important in maintaining high quality playing surfaces-- clipping height, watering, fertilization, coring, thinning and thatch control, and pesticide use.
