Abstract/Contents:"Fenoxaprop, a postemergence herbicide for the control of crabgrasses (Digitaria spp.), can not be used safely on newly-seeded turf species. In a preliminary study we have shown that fenoxaprop phytotoxicity can be alleviated by tank mixes with bentazon. We continued this research in 1990, on a different site, to determine whether this combination would alleviate the phytotoxic effect of fenoxaprop on newly-seeded turfgrasses on different soil and climatic conditions. Three perennial turfgrasses, Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.), tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.), and perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) were seeded April 26, 1990. Treatments were applied June 22 (PO1) and July 10 (PO2) using a CO2-propelled backpack sprayer. Fenoxaprop was applied alone (0.07, 0.10, 0.13, 0.20 kg ai ha-1), or with surfactant at 0.25%, and in combination with bentazon (0.56, 0.84 kg ai ha-1). Stand, vigor, and color of turf grasses as well as control of crabgrass were recorded. Fenoxaprop alone injured Kentucky bluegrass tall fescue and only slightly perennial ryegrass regardless when applied. Additions of surfactant did not reduce injury to any of the turfgrasses. Combinations of fenoxaprop plus bentazon, with or without surfactant, decreased the injury effected by fenoxaprop alone. Control of crabgrass by fenoxaprop alone was effective in all three turf species but greater with the higher rates and generally, greater with the early application. Additions of surfactant and/or bentazon to fenoxaprop did not improve significantly crabgrass control. From this two-year study we concluded that fenofxaprop can be safely used on newly-seeded turfgrasses when tank-mixed with bentazon."
