Abstract/Contents:Performance Soccer Field construction incorporated the best elements of turf design to provide excellent quality fields suitable for all competitive levels. The seed bed (soil) is 12 inches deep and consists of 80 to 85 percent sand by dry weight. This results in an extremely porous material that drains rapidly and resists compaction, allowing for good air infiltration. An underdrain system that consists of 4 inch diameter perforated pipes spaced every 10 feet, carries off excess water. Essentially the Performance Soccer Field is flat, a requirement for international soccer competition, so the internal drainage is extremely important. The United States Soccer Federation has concern regarding the danger of sprinkler heads with the playing surface. With small diameter recessed sprinkler heads now available in the irrigation market, this will not pose a problem. Subsurface soils, sandy and well drained on the Performance Soccer Field, tend to be an inconsistent mixture of medium to poorly drained on the Exhibition Field.
