| Abstract/Contents: | Fifty-four cvs of perennial ryegrass were tested with 2 levels of nitrogen (275 and 75 kg/ha per year, with cuttings removed) and artificial wear during 2 winters. With high N, swards were reduced by wear to about 25% grass cover after the first winter of wear but returned to 90% cover during summer recovery. With low N, swards were reduced by wear to about 10% cover but recovered during summer only to 25%. Cv. Lp DW was outstanding and Score, Perfect, Sturdy and Trimmer were also very good at both N levels. Cvs Cockade, Barcelone and Ensporta were satisfactory under high N and Hunter, Barry, Liraylo and Lisuna under low N. At both N levels the cover at the end of the first winter of wear was strongly correlated with shoot number. Early-heading cvs generally showed 3 defects: poor recovery during summer under low N, poor appearance under regular mowing during summer, and poor appearance and damage by Fusarium nivale [Micronectriella nivalis] at the end of their first (unworn) winter. |
