| Abstract/Contents: | 1989 update of 2 National Fineleaf Fescue Variety tests to evaluate the long-term quality of certain new and experimental red, chewings, hard, and sheep fine fescues at a Kentucky location. Test 1, established 9/83 and concluded in 1989, included forty-eight cultivars seeded in three replications at the rate of 4.65 pounds per 100 square feet. Three pounds of nitrogen per 1000 square feet were applied annually during the fall and early winter. The plots were maintained at a 1.5 inch mowing height. A table provides 1984-88 annual and 5-year average visual quality ratings (1 to 9; 9=best quality) and a visual estimate of % plot cover of fescue on 5/5/89. 5-year average quality ratings ranged from 2.5 (Tatjana, chewings) to 6.2 (Aurora, hard). Percent plot cover ranged from 5 (Tatjana, chewings) to 93 (4LF and Koket, chewings; Scaldis, hard). Test 2, established 9/89, includes 3 replications of 94 varieties seeded in 4' by 5' plots. Maintenance is similar to test 1. Data will be collected in 1990. |
