| Abstract/Contents: | 1989 study to evaluate several commercial and experimental insecticides for control of southern masked chafer grubs in an established Kentucky bluegrass turf. On Sept 2, turf/soil cores (6 x 6 inch) were removed from the plot and set inside 6 inch (dial) x 7 inch (lgth) sections of PVC pipe with the bottoms of the soil core even with the bottom of the pipe. A piece of fiberglass window screen was placed over ends of pipe and the pipes/cores were replaced in the plot. The plot was then irrigated. Third instar southern masked chafer grubs were collected from an untreated golf course rough on Sept. 5. Ten grubs were placed into each cylinder; grubs not burrowing into the soil within ten minutes were replaced. Treatments were arranged in a RCB design with 5 replications. Insecticide treatments were applied on Sept 7. Granular insecticides were mixed with dry sand and handshaken into the cylinders. The liquid formulations were sprayed with 10 ml of water into the cyclinders. The plot was then irrigated with ca. 0.75 inch of water. On Sept 21, the cylinders were removed from the plot, soil cores were broken apart and the number of surviving grubs counted. Except for RH 6808, RH 5849, and RH 1266 at the low rates, all treatments provided significant control. XRM-4902, Triumph, Sevinmol, and Sevin gave >90% reduction relative to the untreated check. There was no apparent phytotoxicity from any treatment. Treatments, formulation, application rate and results are provided in a table. |
