Abstract/Contents:1989 update of test established 5/11/88 to evaluate 2 replications of 25 perennial wildflower species seeded in individual 2' x 5' plots. Tables provide a list of 1988 established species that did not regrow in 1989 and give 1988 and 89 blooming dates, foliage height on 5/24/89, and % ground cover on 6/9/88 and 8/22/89. During the establishment year, more than half of the perennials bloomed; however, of the plants which survived, most were more vigorous and their blooms more showy in 1989. The perennials which performed best overall in 1989 were Black-Eyed Susans, Blue Flax, Dwarf Lance-Leaved Coreopsis, Prairie Coneflower, Roman Chamomile and Red and White Yarrow. These species were dense, had fairly long bloom periods, and competed with weeds. However, it should be noted that the last five mentioned lodged severely when grown in a pure stand.
