| Abstract/Contents: | "An experiment was carried out over 18 months to investigate the fertiliser requirement of Agrostis castellana/Festuca rubra ssp. commutata turf growing on a pure sand construction. Eight fertiliser treatments were applied, ranging from 0 to 784 kg nitrogen ha-1 yr-1 with phosphorus and potassium in the ratio 4 N:1 P2O5:3 K2O. The nitrogen source was ammonium sulphate. The botanical composition of the turf showed a decrease in the dominance of F. rubra with increasing fertiliser application rates. Soil analysis showed that the highest fertiliser rates causes a large drop in rootzone pH and magnesium status. There was a net loss of extractable phosphate from the rootzone at the lowest fertiliser application rates. From assessments of turf appearance and measurements of surface hardness it was concluded that nitrogen had to be applied at a rate exceeding 250 kg N ha-1 yr-1 in order to achieve an acceptable playing surface." |
