| Abstract/Contents: | Zoysiagrass, a warm season grass, requires less fertilizer, water and mowing than cool season grasses. It is tolerant of heat, drought, salinity and heavy traffic. Despite these positive characteristics, zoysiagrass has not become as popular as other turfgrasses because of its slow rate of establishment, long dormant period and its tendency to be a thatch producer. A breeding program under the direction of the late Dr. Victor B. Youngner and implemented by Stanley Spaulding, was undertaken at the University of California to improve the characteristics of zoysiagrass. "El Toro" was the result from this breeding work. It has a faster rate of establishment, better season color and earlier spring greenup, and its thatch production has improved some. |
