Annotation from Turfgrass History and Literature: Lawns, Sports, and Golf, by James B Beard, Harriet J. Beard and James C Beard: | "A key book that is a must for collectors of historical turf and/or golf books. It is one of the classic works on the architecture and construction of golf courses. The chapter subject topics include the following:
I. Different Courses II. The Strategy of Golf Courses III. Something about Choice and Construction IV. The General Plan for the Property V. Beauty and Utility VI. Adapting the Course to the Ground VII. The Ability to Create VIII. The Balance of Area IX. Actual Construction X. Remodeling Old Courses XI. Arbitrary Values XII. The Unknown Equation XIII. Underdrainage
The chapters on construction and establishment were the most comprehensive that had been written up to 1927. The photos of golf holes and the architectural drawing were well done, especially the latter. It includes a drawing for an eighteen golf course of one-shot holes in the back. George Thomas discussed the costs of constructing a golf course in California in 1927 as follows:
A representative cost to build an 18-hole golf course in California in 1927 would be US $81,000; with the minimum cost for course maintenance in California being US $25,000." p. 447 |

Annotation from Golf Course Design, by Geoffrey S. Cornish and Michael J. Hurdzan: | "Regarded as the American classic on course design, this book has inspired generations of designers and writers. It covers many of the greatest courses of the day and why they were important, together with most aspects of design. This work has also inspired generations of designers and writers, and as a reference book helped restore course architecture following a quarter of a century of neglect during the Depression and World War II, when the art form was almost lost." p. 102 |
Cornish & Hurdzan Ratings: | D5; C4; M2; H4; P2 |
