| Abstract/Contents: | A 7-year-old Penncross creeping bentgrass (Agrostis palustris [stolonifera]) sward with a 22 mm thatch was treated with (i) vertical mowing weekly or (ii) monthly, (iii) vertical mowing monthly + sandy loam soil topdressing (0-1 m3/100 m2), coring (using a turf aerator with tines 13 mm in diameter) monthly, (iv) alone or (v) with topdressing, or (vi) topdressing alone. The treatments were applied from May to October and after 4-6 of these respective treatments accumulated thatch (mm) was 9.1, 9.4, 4.0, 8.1, 4.9 and 4.2, significantly less than the controls (untreated apart from the usual mowing and fertilizing applied to all plots) which had 11.5 mm. Thus any treatments involving topdressing were significantly better than those employing vertical mowing or coring alone. It is suggested that topdressing improves turf quality by improving the microenvironment for thatch decomposition. Winter injury was most severe on plots vertical-mowed weekly during the previous growing season and least severe on plots cored and topdressed monthly. |
