| Abstract/Contents: | Many problems exist with greenkeeping in the widespread area of South Africa mainly due to various climates and conditions. There is a summer rainfall area, with a dry period where temperatures fall severely. But, there is a winter rainfall area, with a hot dry period. Rainfall varies along with temperature in this region. The winter infestation of Poa Annua is the biggest problem in the Cape and the winter rainfall area. Gramaxone or Paraquat is a new weedkiller for the control of Poa Annua and is discussed in detail. Drastic treatment is given to the greens during spring. The greens are scarified, thoroughly soaked and hollow tine forked. Then a fertilizer mixture is applied, watered in lightly, then topdressed with a compost mixture. Nitrogen is then applied. Presents information about cutting and mowing of the greens. Dicusses certain fertilizer programmes work for certain areas. Weed problems become less and less. Gives procedures where weeds do appear. Insect problems do arise. Various insecticides are used such as Dieldrin, Parathion, Agrocide, Metasystox, and others. Fungus is also a problem and much is being done to give advice on the control. |
