| Abstract/Contents: | "Seed proteins from 122 registered cultivars of Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) were analysed for variation of the isoenzyme esterase using isoelectric focusing (IEF) of bulk seed samples. After electrophoresis in IEF gels of pH 3-10, cultivars could be classified into six categories, using only the first band near the cathode for discrimination. This classification was only slightly related to morphological characteristics. Using the whole banding pattern for comparison, 102 cultivars could be discriminated in total. Samples of a cultivar from different harvest years showed the same banding pattern. By using bulk seed samples, a mixture of cultivars could wrongly be interpreted as a new cultivar, since homogeneity of a cultivar could not be observed. For examining distinctness, uniformity and stability (DUS) of a cultivar, it could be useful to combine electrophoresis results with morphological characteristics." |
