| Abstract/Contents: | 1986 update of 2 tests to evaluate tall fescue varieties under Kentucky climatic conditions. Test 1, established 9/82, includes 46 named and experimental varieties. Three pounds of nitrogen per 1000 square feet are applied annually during the fall and early winter. Botanical counts were made in the winter. For each mowing height, a table provides 1983-86 annual and 4-year average visual quality ratings (1 to 9; 9=best quality) and tall fescue tillers per sq. in. At 1.5 inches, tillers ranged from 1.5 (NK 81453) to 5.8 (52 W) and 4-year average ratings ranged from 4.8 (Triumph) to 7.9 (Apache). At 3 inches, tillers ranged from 0.6 (NK 81453) to 3.3 (Adventure) and 4-year average ratings ranged from 4.9 (SoFm Blend) to 7.4 (Apache). Test 2, established 9/26/83, is included in the National Tall Fescue Variety Test. Fifty-four experimental and named cultivars in 3 replications were seeded of 4.65 pounds per 1000 square feet and are maintained at 1.5 inch mowing height, without regular irrigation. Three pounds of nitrogen per 1000 square feet are applied annually during fall and early winter. Botanical counts were made in the winter. A table provides 1984-86 annual and 3-year average visual quality ratings and tiller counts. Tillers ranged from 2.7 (Kenhy) to 6.8 (Mustang). |
