Abstract/Contents: | "Definitions and synonyms of 'thatch' are considered. The preferred definition is 'an intermingled organic layer of dead and living shoots, stems and roots that develops between the zone of green vegetation and the soil surface'. Terms other than thatch are considered inadvisable for everyday use, because of inconsistency, but it seems useful to distinguish between different kinds of thatch and in particular between the two kinds recognized on UK golf courses-fibrous thatch and spongy thatch. Brief reference is made to experience of thatch in other countries and on other kinds of turf, especially the thatch developed by Poa pratensis. The reasons for thatch build-up are briefly reviewed under four headings (kind of grass, nutrients and water, pH and conditions for soil fauna, and absence of sufficient wear and adequate maintenance practices). An outline is given of the preventive and curative meaures appropriate to golf courses, particularly golf greens. This makes reference to a tabulated summary of suggested standard UK terminology for various mechanical operations. Notes are given on the various causes of 'dry patches', particularly the hydrophobic conditions due to organic coatings on the mineral particles in sandy rootzones, and an Appendix draws attention to various concepts in soil science which are more or less analogous to 'thatch'." |
