Abstract/Contents: | Seven tall fescue cultivars (Kenwell, Ky 31, Atlanta, DBC 85, Mustang, Johnstone, Kenhy) each with high and low levels of fungal endophyte (Acremonium coenophialum) were established in two experiments (designated A&B) to determine their relative disease tolerance to brown patch (Rhizoctonia solani). This was the first attempt to determine whether or not a fungal endophyte influences disease in the field. Cultivars were sown at 5lb/1000 ft2 16 Sep 85 (A) and 11 Sep 85 (B) in 6x10 ft plots replicated 6 times (A) and 4 times (B) and arranged in a randomized complete block design. The turfgrasses, grown on a Maury slit loam soil, were maintained at 2 in. (A) and 3 in. (B) mowing height and fertilized with 3 lb N/1000 ft2 in the fall. Both experiments were irrigated following seeding, but only experiment A was watered during summer dry periods. Fungicides were not used. The disease was evaluated by estimating the percentage of plot area showing brown patch symptoms on 29 Jul (A) and 24 Jul(B). Each experiment was evaluated by a different investigator. The weather during the weeks preceeding evaluation was hot and humid. Significant differances in cultivar reaction to brown patch was shown; however no consistent association between endophyte infection and brown patch disease was observed. A summary of results is presented. |
