Abstract/Contents:All 6 seed mixtures sown on the slopes of motorway cuttings [see the previous abstract] showed a 4-phase development: initial establishment, thinning out, regrowth and final stability. The actual cycle in each case depended on nutrient availability and the development of the soil cover. On extremely dry slopes Festuca vallesiaca pseudovina gave the best ground cover. Taller, coarser F. rubra cvs grew better than the finer turf cvs. After initial domination by F. rubra, the less demanding F. ovina usually took over, and in acid conditions F. ovina tenuifolia was predominant. Agrostis tenuis disappeared from the drier slopes and Poa pratensis was usually conspicuous after a dry period. Lolium perenne did not survive.
