Abstract/Contents:Reviews the qualities of recycled water, management practices, and potential for turfgrass and landscape irrigation. Claims that most turfgrass fields reside in urban centers where it must compete with human consumption and food production for the cleanest irrigation water. Identifies turfgrass as well-outiftted for irrigation with reclaimed water due to its ability to absorb large amounts of nitrogen, and suggests that the utilization of recycled water in urban settings may be a viable means for coping with drought. Describes the potential problem of "dissolved solids," or salts, remaining in the reclaimed water even after treatment, which when applied to turfgrass may build up in the soil causing damage such as nutritional imbalances. Details several solutions for managing water salinity in turf irrigation such as selecting salt-tolerant turfgrass species, applying extra water to dilute excess salts at the rootzone, and providing adequate drainage.
