Abstract/Contents:Fifteen types of turf consisting of cvs of Lolium perenne, Festuca rubra, F. vallesiaca, Agrostis spp. and Poa pratensis (either separately or as mixtures) were tested for tolerance to 0, 0.5, 1.0 or 2.0 kg/m2 road salt applied in about 50 applications from November to March. F. rubra trichophylla and L. perenne were the best, ranging from good salt tolerance to partial resistance; F. rubra rubra, F. vallesiaca and Poa pratensis were partly resistant to moderately salt tolerant, with marked varietal response differences in P. pratensis; and F. rubra commutata, A. canina and A. tenuis were very liable to damage by road salt. Mixtures reacted according to the salt tolerance of the dominant species. Winter application of 2 kg/m2 road salt killed all grasses except F. rubra cv. Dawson and Poa pratensis cv. Skofti, with no regeneration at all; this was attributed to the very dry conditions in the first winter and subsequent growth season. Salt lay on the plants for a long time, undissolved or in a highly concentrated solution, and was hardly washed away at all; with dry conditions persisting in spring, the damaged plants were quite unable to send up new shoots.
