Abstract/Contents: | When diseased plant tissue is examined, it is found to carry a variety of fungi. One is not sure which is causing the disease, which are saprophytes feeding on dead tissue and which are there by accident. By defining the solution, first, the organism must always be present when disease symptoms show. Second, the organism, isolated from diseased tissue, must be grown in pure culture. Third, when the organism is inoculated into a healthy plant under suited conditions it must cause symptoms of the disease. Last, one must re-isolate the organism from the now diseased plant and identify it as the same organism that was inoculated. The relationship is even more complex with the plant and fungi as parts of a network comprising the total environment. |
