| Abstract/Contents: | Addresses the potential problem of the black cutworm, a common turfgrass caterpillar, for golf course maintenance. Describes the black cutworm as a nocturnal feeder on putting greens which leave unsightly brown pockmarks in the turf. Explains that the application of several insecticides including synthetic pyrethoids, carbamates, organophosphates, and oxadiazines may be effective, but only for a short period of time. Recommends first washing the worms out of underground burrows with soapy water, and then applying chlorantraniliprole for a potentially more permanent eradication. Warns that temperature fluctuations and hot conditions may compromise the effectiveness of the pesticide. |
