Abstract/Contents:Describes the various natural defense systems plants employ against pathogens. Claims that "plant defense is an extremely complicated process that involves an intricate system of signaling molecules and proteins." Describes how plants use specific molecules such as proteins, salicylic acid, or individual elements like calcium to signal an invasion from a pathogen. Mentions the two pathways responsible for alerting the plant to pathogen infection: systemic acquired resistance and induced systemic resistance. Explains that there have been fungicides developed which claim to induce natural plant defense as a means of disease control. Continues on the potential importance for superintendents to understand the natural plant defense systems because it may potentially help to make an educated decision on the value of these products.
