Abstract/Contents:Discusses polo fields and the potential "unique challenges" pertaining to their management. Profiles the J-5 Equestrian Center in Littleton, Colorado, focusing on its field renovations. Mentions its original condition: no drainage system, no proper grading, and "appears as though 4 to 6 inches of sand loam was thrown on top of the native soil and rock that were left over from the cobblestone mine that the area was used for at the beginning of the century." Provides a description of a typical polo field, as well as how the game is played. Describes the Center's watering solution as "unique" because of the the lack of a proper irrigation and sprinkler system. Suggests the importance of soil moisture for polo and how it may effect the horse's ability to run. Concludes that the goal was to "make [the] fields comparable with the world class facilities where the highest level of polo is played."
