Abstract/Contents: | Discusses the potential for corn-gluten meal to act as a weed killer. Warns that "this product is only effective before weeds emerge; if you plan accordingly, it can be a great alternative to other chemically based products." Explains that "corn-gluten meal, which contains 60 percent protein and 10 percent nitrogen by weight, acts as a weed killer by releasing a protein that inhibits roots from forming on germinating seeds." Provides recommendations for effective corn-gluten meal application. Concludes that "corn-gluten meal usually continues to work for about five to six weeks following germination. In general, I recommend 20 pounds of product per 1,000 square feet for weed control." |
